Faq And Reviews – About Best Trolling Motor

Jenny asks…
what’s the best trolling motor for a pelican jon boat?
I have a 12ft pelican jon boat, fiberglass/plastic type material, flat bottom so its heavy.. i was wondering what kind of trolling motor is best for it and what kind of marine battery would go well with the trolling motor so it don’t die too quick..
I took the boat out once and borrowed my friends trolling motor (minn kota 36lbs thrust) and his battery. battery was fully charged but it didn’t last more than 2 hours
looks like this:

any help would be appreciated thanks!

2 hours isn’t bad.I’d choose Minn Kota Endura 30 or 40.
Batteries are expensive, but cheap $50 ones don’t deliver the energy that $150 ones do.

MInn Kota, get one with the maximizer feature, it will extend battery time by 5.

I have a 12 ft v boat, what kind of trolling motor would work best?
ok, so i have a 12 ft V Grumman aluminum boat, and i need to know what kind of trolling motor to get for it. thank you
also, it needs to move the boat and 3 hefty men.
Can you tell me specifically what to buy? i don’t really know anything about boats, i got it last year for my 15th birthday, so i have no idea about this stuff.

An electric trolling motor is the easiest to install. I recommend adding a 2nd battery, deep cycle, so that you don’t run yourself out of power.
I also recommend installing it with a perko switch meant for dual batteries and wired apporiately. This will allow you to charge it with the normal motor but isolate it when the motor is not running.
Otherwise one with medium thrust levels will be more than enough. From there its how much you want to spend for what type of controls. Some trolling motors even can be steered electrically by the control pedal.
A kicker motor, which is a 2nd outboard (10 hp or less) has advantages. Especially if the primary motor dies….. But i don’t think its an option on your size of boat and it is definitely a more expensive route.
