I own a 24v Motorguide (87 lb thrust) & it has been very good to me – I use it regularly and have had no issues. However, I will say that both MinKota & Motor guide make a very good trolling motor – you can not go wrong either way.

It’s a great choice to go with a 24v set up, as you will get much more life & better performance on the water.

Also, your 17.5 foot fiberglass boat is most likely somewhat heavy, so be sure to get a motor with at least 55 lbs of thrust (or more).

The shaft length is also very important. If it’s too short, your prop will be lifting out of the water on windy days (if it’s a bow mount)

WHY Motorguide over Minn Kota?

Although Minn Kota makes a decent trolling motors they never run as strong as a Motorguide- example- A 55 LB Motorguide will pull at the advertised “55 pounds”, whereas, a 55 LB Minn Kota will pull around 50 LB’s.

You need all the “advertised” power you can get when your trying to pull against a tidal current…..esp with a heavy boat like a Key Largo.

(How do I KNOW about the Motorguide/Minn Kota??? I sold them in my store and had customers do actual tests on the water. Also, I did a test of my own on the water once…..)

You will need at least a 71LB thrust to pull your boat with “confidence”.

Whichever brand someone owns is the one they will recommend.
Buy whichever you get the best deal on because truly I dont think you can go wrong with either.
