Yes your charger will work for any 12 volt battery.

HOW DOES A PORTABLE TROLLING MOTOR BATTERY CHARGER WORK?

I am looking at buying a Minn Kota 1820110 MK-110P Portable 10 Amp Charger
and I would like to know where the charger gets its energy from. Do you always have to plug it into a wall? I cannot find an answer otherwise. There are no specifications on the web as to what the power source of the charger is. It would be nice to know before I buy. I am going to buy a battery and need to know what type of charger I will need to keep it maintained.

Staff – Customer Service answers:

You need a 110-120 Volt 15 amp receptacle for this charger. Any household receptacle will do. For it to operate it will always need to either be plugged into a wall receptacle OR an inverter receptacle capable of producing 10 amps at 110-120 volts. The latter is usually a waste as it takes 12 volts to produce the inverter voltage and there is some current loss, so you might as well just use the battery power if you can. If that were the only way to get your battery charged, it could be feasible.

As for batteries, I’d use a deep cycle trolling battery as thay have the ability to accept deep discharge cycles and then be charged back to full capcity many times. Normal marine batteries do not do that well, the plates get sulfated fast and they quit accepting charges sooner.

Good luck and enjoy boating!

My trolling motor boat battery takes over 18 hours to charge before it is even full. What is wrong?

Well, I accidentally bought a boat deep cycle starting motor battery for my boat’s trolling motor instead of a trolling battery for it 3 years ago. I have two battery chargers, and when I use either one to charge my trolling motor battery, it takes over 18 hours to have a full charge. What is wrong? Is the battery not good or something, or is it because I am using a deep cycle boat motor starter battery for my trolling motor?

Staff – Customer Service answers:

It’s calcified. A deep cycle battery is what you want. Try buying a ‘fancy’ digital charger that specifically says it can recondition old batteries. The high freq. Pulses of high voltage can break up the crust that accumulates on the lead plates of the battery. (full disclosure, I have a Vector battery charger and it has brought a marine deep cycle, lawn tractor, and motorcycle battery back from the dead. It has more than paid for itself.)
