Trolling motor for 11 foot aluminum jon boat?

I am purchasing a 11 foot aluminum jon boat and trolling motor without battery for around $300 dollars. The boat has a few patches which wont be a big deal to fix, My father is a welder and said he would do them. Is that a good deal? Also my questions for the trolling motor. What type of battery is best recommended? They seem so expensive almost 200 dollars some places. I would hate to pay more for the battery then the entire boat. Im confused as to where i should be looking for batteries. I know it would be helpful to know the size of the motor, and the voltage but I do have that information yet to pass along so I have to be general! Thanks in advance!

Lead acid batteries self discharge regardless of the location. Concrete is not an issue if your battery is on a maintenance charge. There may be an issue with stratification outside in very cold weather with a battery that is not being maintained, however after a couple of months it will be at a low state of charge anyway, and may be fatally injured anyway if it falls below 10.5 V Always wear safety glasses when doing anything to a battery!! Hydrogen is a product of charging and is extremely explosive. Batteries do blow up, literally into lots of pieces and the acid is something you do NOT want in your eyes!!

The price is a direct reflection of the metal content and internal construction of the battery. You will get only as much as you pay for. No car battery will cope with even a mild discharge cycle for very long, because they are not designed to do any more than start the engine – a brief very high current load for a few seconds and then the alternator supplies all power requirements when the engine is running. A deep cycle battery as sold in many places is best described as a ‘less shallow’ cycle battery, they can be pulled down to as much as 80% of capacity, but this may give you a life of as little as 75 – 150 cycles. If you only pull down a deepcycle battery to 50% the life span jumps to 400-600 cycles, maybe more if a quality battery is chosen, and cycle rates in the thousands if you never drop below 30% are quite common. It is a fantasy to think a car battery can be pulled down to 100 % more than a few times before total failure, I have seen brand new batteries completely destroyed in 48 hrs. And as most batteries are never charged near 100% in their life it is amazing they last as long as they do frankly. Absorbant glass matt types are the bees knees for this application, but they are expensive. Because they can cope with huge abuse for hundreds of cycles they often end up much cheaper in the long run. To charge AGM batteries you are best with a three stage charge unit, from a reliable company, like CTek or Federal. You cannot charge AGM and conventional batteries together, in any configuration, ever – as the internal resistance is radically different.

The only unregulated charges I have succeeded with over the last thirty years are solar panels not exceeding 20watts, with smaller batteries in the long days of summer I would not exceed 10 watts.

In the eight years of living on our block with no mains power and a family I was successful in destroying every known combination of battery, charger, generator and several electrical items. The only things I have now are the ones that work.

I’ll stick a couple of my favorite links below. If you don’t educate yourself, you won’t know when the salesman is having a go, will you.

Good luck, and I hope you enjoy your new boat.

Ha Ha Ha …Better check closer…I hope you know how to swim. You first have to check mfgr’s specs on capacity in persons/pounds… I doubt you could carry 5 adults in that boat..Don’t forget required safety equioment !
Mfgr’s specs also must state horsepower limits for boat. . That determines size of motor. Next : another weighty matter ( pun intended) a reasonable marine deep discharge battery is at least 45 lbs.Good for more hours than you could stand sitting in that boat.
What you need to look out for is the so called deep cycle batteries that is really a hybrid – a mixture between a starting battery and a real deep cycle battery. A real deep cycle battery will have solid plates – and will be heavier then a starting battery.

The major brands all make good quality batteries. The Optima is more hybrid from all I have read – they make a great battery for all around marine use. The Trojan makes a true deep cycle battery that may suit your needs better, IMHO.

Check with your Ohio DNR. In WV you just have to have the motor in the tilted up position, but if someone reports you falsely for running it, you could have big problems. Better safe than sorry. DNR has the official answer to your question.

Staff – Customer Service answers:

The best trolling motor I ever had is a Motor Guide with a stainless steel shaft and a break away mount. I have used it since 1991 and it has outlasted two boats and is on a third one. I fish an average of 120 days a year and most is from daylight to dark. The only problem was a high speed switch that went out and cost about $7 to replace. Not bad for 20 years worth of use.

But you wont use the short shaft on your boat, but not knowing the specific design of your boat I wont guess at it.Call a dealership and ask them for advice on the length of the shaft. It needs to be right, because if it is too tall you will have a hard time fishing over it, and if you lower it too deeply in the water to make up for it you will not be able to fish in the shallows with it.

Hi
this happens to be an area i know a little bit about ,
a trolling motor wont push a 10 or 12 ft john boat very well what you might check into is a gheenoe i have had 3 gheenoes with trolling motors and it is the perfect combination a 36 lb thrust trolling motor will push it 7 or 8 miles per hour on a hot day thats just fast enough to create a cool breeze very manuverable a gheenoe is a canoe that has had some modifications done you can stand up in it, you can throw a castnet off of it ,it wont tip over.
Check out gheen manufacturing in titusville florida, also custom gheenoes .com
if you are dead set on a john boat get a 10 or 15 h.p. Gas outboard motor that would push a 12 ft at about 15 -18 mph.

Now go catch a fish will ya

The rule of thumb is to figure out what your boat weighs fully loaded….people, outboard, gasoline, & equipment. You should have a minimum of 2 pounds of thrust per every 100 pounds of weight. The higher thrust the better the pushing power you will have in wind or current. But, be careful because to high can be overkill.

Also, a lot of lakes these days are electric only (NO Gas Outboards)

Staff – Customer Service answers:

Any 12 volt wet cell or AGM battery will power the motor, but you really need the biggest, heaviest marine deepcycle battery you can afford.

A “marine” battery is made to withstand the harsh enviroment (temperature extremes, shock & vibration, long periods of disuse) — tougher case, thicker plates, etc. An automotive battery won’t last long.

A deep cycle battery is made to take repetitive deep discharge/recharge cycles without failing prematurely. Your car’s battery wouldn’t last 6 months in a deep cycle application.

Heavier battery means more lead, means better run time.

I use walmart’s biggest trolling battery, an everstart group 29; mostly because you can get it replaced 24/7 and you’re never far from a walmart, Fact that it has 2-year free replacement and doesn’t usually last 2 years means usually you pay once & never have to buy another. Doesn’t always work that way though — the one I have now is over 3 years old.

Get yourself a good quality battery charger, recharge it soon as you get off the water, and top it off the night before your next trip.

Staff – Customer Service answers:

Well, you have some good answers so far. Just let me add, that if you plan on using this motor for any length of time, you will want a deep cycle battery. I have a 36 volt troller on my bass boat, and use them on eight to ten hour tourneys, and up to twelve on practice days. If you use the d/cy battery, you will have full power for about 90% of the charge. A auto/truck battery will start losing noticable power at 50%. The batterys I use come basicly in two sizes. If you are going to use it for several hours as you stated, I think I would invest in the larger one. It seems no matter how much I spend on a battery, it really performs best for two years, then declines. I have had the best luck with evereadys. It is what I’ve used the last eight years, there very well priced, and do as well as those priced higher. I’m not cheap, but have discovered these perform best. A good trolling motor battery can sometimes mean the difference between a check or a blank. The point here is, a middle of the road deep cycle battery will be best. If you plan on long days, a large one would be best. Just remember, a slow charge is best to regenerate the battery. They sell chargers that have a deep cycle mode. All these things are available at Walmart. Have fun, and good fishing, my favorite passtime.

UPS will deliver a package overseas. Inorder to calculate cost very detailed information is required. The height, length, width and weight are required for an accurate estimation of cost. They also require you to pick whether the item will be shipped on a pallet or “loose”. I used an estimated size, shipping on a pallet and the price was from $390 to $456 in American dollars (based on pallet shipping, 35-inches long, 22-inchest wide, 20-inches high and 35 lbs). This was 18% lower than shipping via the United States Postal Service.

I agree with others who advised getting a battery charger. You can get a decent small one as little as 20 bucks. Any auto parts, hardware, Walmart or similar, Menards or Home Depot, you don’t need over 10 or 15 amps. Charge over night for next day’s fishing. You should get at least 3-4 hours constant use from any battery, more from a deep cycle. You will pay more for 4 or 5 charges than a charger will cost.

Get a deep cycle marine battery and make sure it is not a marine cranking battery. For a charger I disagree with the other posters. Get you an automatic cut off 6 amp, 8 amp or 10 amp battery charger. The main reason for this is if you run your battery down after a full day of fishing a trickle charger will not be able to fully charge it back up in time to have a fully charged battery if you are planning to fish two days in a row.I fish 4 and 5 days straight at times and the battery has to be completely charged overnight. The trickle chargers at 2 amp will not do it.
